Discover Great Reads

Recommendations for your bookshelf

Welcome to Author R.L. Drake's newest book discoveries. Aside from writing my own stories, I also make time to find new and indie authors to read.
Every month I add 4 -5 books to my reading list, purchase them myself, and give an honest review. The books you'll find on this page are one's I would highly recommend to any fantasy genre lovers.
This passion filled project has helped me to find some unique and amazing books in the fantasy genre that I would never typically seek out on my own. However the results have been wonderful, as my taste's have broadened so much more than I originally expected.
So get comfy, pick a book, and happy reading.

The Queen's Keeper

Fantasy

Holy Cow!!! If any of you love great fantasy books, you have to check out 'The Queen's Keeper' by J.L. Vampa. This book is full of such interesting characters, creatures, and worlds. The plot is dynamic and pulls you along for the ride as the main character, Veni struggles in fighting her darkness and being the best version of herself that she can be...something we can all relate with no matter our background.
I have no problem with comparing this book to those written by J.R.R Tolkien, Terry Goodkind, or Cornelia Funke. If you are looking for a magical world to escape to with character's you'll fall in love with, you have to read 'The Queen's Keeper.

Travelers - The Travelers Duology

Young/New Adult Fantasy Romance

Travelers by Carla Reighard. You definitely don't have to be a kid to enjoy this story about time traveling mermaids. It is a great love story with a strong female lead who puts her people above all else...even at times her heart. Without giving too much away I would like to say that nowhere else have I read a book that combines, time traveling magic wielding merpeople from another world. It was done in a well put together way that even delves into some of our favorite characters from history. I'll leave you with this...if you like Gilmore girls - and come on, who doesn't? - you need to check out this book. I can't wait to read what happens in the next installment of the Travelers Duology and see where Triana's story and heart take her next.

The Purple Door District - Erin Casey

Urban Fantasy

The Purple Door District by Erin Casey.
I love this book, and I loved that it was the most unique shifter story line that I've read. The characters were diverse in all aspects from age, parahuman species, race, gender, and sexuality. The author writes in a way that doesn't cram her belief's down your throat, but allows you to relate to the characters.
The Purple Door District gives you insight to several of the characters view points, and you either fall in love with them, or can sympathize with their motives. The plot line is well thought out and not predictable at all. Throughout the story you can see the main character Bianca's growth as she copes with everything that has happened to her.
Erin Casey does a great job of writing and it is hard to believe that she is a first time author. She is very talented and I look forward to seeing what comes next from her.
If you like anything in the fantasy, mythical, or paranormal genre I would highly recommend taking the time to check this book out. It was definitely a feel good book with strong characters across the board.
